| New, Improved Route from Wellington to East Carbon, Sunnyside |
5/1/2008 5:57pm |
| County officials have been pursuing a different route that would carry users between Coal Creek Road and East Carbon. The new route would bring the backbone trail much closer to Wellington City, making future links much more feasible. The route utilizes existing and historic trails across the valley closer to SR-6. We are working closely with the BLM, SITLA, and other entities to clear the way. Good work, Dave, Max, and Rex!
Mapping of the new route will be posted as soon as we review it with the BLM and other governing agencies. |

| We continue to work toward acquisition of funding. An application for CIB funding has been submitted but has been postponed due to other major issues that need to be addressed by the County. Stay Tuned! We anticipate making the presentation to the CIB later this year. |

| The County is pursuing CIB funding for construction of Phase I of the Trail project. The application will be submitted to the CIB on April 1, 2007. The Trail project will then be presented to the CIB in Summer 2007 with funding likely coming in August 2007. The County would like to obtain as much additional funding as possible. |

The design team is working to determine the most feasible crossing location for Dugout Canyon Road. An underpass will likely be installed due to the heavy coal truck traffic and related safety issues. Topographical survey work will be completed in East Carbon and along Dugout Canyon Road. |
| Status Update - 5/11/2006 |

| The pursuit of the Cross-County Trail continues. Due to issues at some locations at the western portion of the Trail, the focus has shifted to the region between the County Fairgrounds to Nine Mile Canyon northeast of Sunnyside.
Trail designers and County staff have visited City Council meetings of East Carbon, Sunnyside, Price, and Wellington Cities. Helper City and other areas will soon be visited as well. The purpose of these visits was to gather comments, concerns, and insight into local issues since the main Trail has planned links to each community. These links are vital to encourage recreation by locals and facilitate visitors, with the resulting economic benefits. Each community is cooperative with the project and has expressed interest in completing the County’s “backbone” project as soon as possible. Affected property owners have also been cooperative in allowing the Trail to cross their properties.
The next steps include refining the Trail design in select areas, continuing discussions with property owners and municipalities, assembling the final construction plans, and actual construction. Staging areas for vehicle parking will be designated, comfort stations will be scattered throughout the project, kiosks will be designed to highlight local points of interest, and other critical items will be completed.
We encourage you to submit comments, concerns, and suggestions!

The alignment through East Carbon and Sunnyside will be addressed in the very near future.

| Scofield: |

Jones & DeMille Engineering has been working with Carbon County officials to define a potential alignment south of Scofield. This portion of the trail between Scofield and Broads Canyon Road is one of the most critical sections of the entire corridor. Taking the trail along SR-96 would impact wetlands (requiring months of permitting through the US Army Corps of Engineers), require realignments of the creek, result in extreme design and construction costs to get through the tightest section of the canyon at the mouth of Eccles Canyon.
The preferred alignment south of Scofield is located east of the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way. We have been contacting property owners to coordinate right-of-way through private properties south of Scofield (and north of Wellington). The cooperation of property owners has been greatly appreciated and we hope to continue to have positive negotiations. An aerial survey of the corridor is currently underway to better define this alignment and its impacts. There is nothing like trying to outrun winter weather.
